Some examples: usernames, passwords, global hosts (ldap.company.com), etc...
Special case should be considered for passwords: define only, no viewing, or even automatic generation without possiblity for most users to view the value...

Is this something at the technique level, like the "Generic CFEngine variable definition" and the "Generic Command variable definition" ?
Or would it be some kind of variables defined at Rudder level (somewhere in the UI, perhaps in a new page "define new variables") ?
