Description

Generally speaking, the density of informations in the UI could be improved.

I'll try here to make a list of places where there is space left in the UI.
When possible, I'll try to make some propositions.

the bar with the logo

This line is consuming much too much space !

The clickable logo has no functional use: it is redundant with the "Home" Tab element.

The logo could be transformed in a visual only element, and placed somwheare else. I mean: placed somwhere where there is already some free space. Maybe a smaller logo it the "log out" line ? A big logo is great in the login page, and maybe in the home dashboard, but for the general usage of the application it is a disturbance (see redmine or zabbix UI as example for UI avoiding that)

There is also no need for a complete line for the "Deployment status" box. Maybe it could be moved in the left menu bar, as the format of the box is accurate for that.
The home dashboard is a place where this box should be integrated as standard dashboard box.

the left menu

you can hide it: that's great ! if only the logo line could be hidden like that !

but it is not the better thing to hide: for instance when you edit directives and rules, you are constantly using it...

internal screen: configuration policy > rules as example

as an example, some thoughts about this screen

With a 1920x1080 screen, you have to scroll to see the content of the "Rule details" section ! One objective should be: display this screen without scrolling.(Of course it will be easier with the UI enhancements described before)

One line is consumed with the titles: "List of rules, Rule details". This should take less vertical space. Visual design should help.

One line is consumed for one single button "Add a new rule". This button could be displayed in a box under the left menu for instance.

The display of "Rule details" is not compact at all. It could be more compact.

On a large screen, the "Directives" column is not expanded, whereas other columns with less informations are much too much expanded (Compliance for instance). The adaptation of the columns should be modified.

Thanks for all your returns Fabrice! We always need to improve Rudder user experience, and those feedback are really what we are looking for!

We will try to think about all your ideas, and get back to you with some enhancement propositions. hoping they fit in Rudder 2.8!

I'll assign this ticket to you Jon, maybe we need to organize a meeting with the development team about that topic.

  • Assignee changed from Jonathan CLARKE to Vincent MEMBRÉ
  • Priority changed from N/A to 4
  • Target version changed from Ideas (not version specific) to 2.8.0~beta1

This is a good summary of simple improvements we can make.

I would like to try and get at least the first one (" the bar with the logo") into 2.8.

We could try to do this change for Rudder 2.8~rc1

  • Target version changed from 2.8.0~rc1 to Ideas (not version specific)

This won't be done for Rudder 2.8.0.

Postponed to a later version.

  • Status changed from New to Rejected
  • Target version changed from Ideas (not version specific) to 3.0.0~beta1

All of these points have been addressed in the UI redesign in Rudder 3.0. See ticket #5537 for details, and please test out the upcoming beta version of 3.0!
