Description

Hi,

I've been nagged about this once more, and would like to put this here for discussion.
Right now in the lab we've laid out about 20 node group categories and around 50 groups.
This means the treeview (unfolded) covers a much larger area than your screen.

My suggestion would be to unfold only the categorygroup / category level, but not the final leaf / groups level.

This means the full structure would be visible if you enter the page, and a certain group (if structure is good) will be reached by only unfolding one category.
Otherwise one could have a button / hotkey to expand / collapse all.

Hello Florian,

We used to unfold only first level of categories, but it was not good, for obvious reasons (you ended every time with something that wasn't what you wanted).

Your solution seems better, but can you explain how a category with both sub categories and groups ? Both solution (unfolding until the first category which contains at least one group or unfolding until a category contains only groups) seems to have pros and cons.

This means the full structure would be visible if you enter the page, and a certain group (if structure is good) will be reached by only unfolding one category.
Otherwise one could have a button / hotkey to expand / collapse all.

Expands/Collapse all the thread ? Or the whole tree ? If the second, as in Directive tree with the "filter" input, it's implemented in 3.0 (#5834), but being able the fold/unfold only one thread seems to be a really nice idea.

All in all, I find that the current tree organisation is not really usable. Tree are never unfold like they should, and navigation into them is hard. If you choose the wrong root category, you are good to unfold/fold every thing again an again. The filter is a little better, because at least, you can guess for words in your group. Tags would certnainly helps with all tansversal categorisation (and hard question like "does my pam config goes in user management or in system security ?").

When there is something selected (directives and groups in a rule or current directive in directives view) we should fold everything except what is selected.
