This doesn't sound unreasonable, in principle. I can imagine a scenario where you want to pre-create Directives, just knowing their name and Technique/version, but don't want to fill in their variables yet.

However, this shouldn't cause the user to "get stuck". If you can create this Directive, and then also modify it (both by the API and the WebUI), in order to be able to fill it in and then enable it, I'm fine with that. Nico, can you confirm this is possible?

Otherwise, we need to provide a solution to "get out" of this corner.
